This book is every bit as fun and entertaining as the first in the series. If you have young kids that like a bit of "eerie" suspense and a fun mystery to solve, this will be just the thing.I love these books because they offer young children an opportunity to learn new words and phrases whilst keeping them entertained with action packed adventures that are sure to thrill.The stories are not gross and don't have anything inappropriate in them so they are ideal for parents who wish to avoid such subject matter. The characters are cute and each story appears to be a continuation of the last, but with new characters and events.My boys had a lot of fun reading this story with me, but I also think girls would enjoy it. The mysteries are exciting and the story is short enough to read in one sitting but long enough that it would make a great chapter book for beginning readers.I recommend this book for kids just beginning to expand their reading abilities.This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. My son is a reluctant reader, he always prefers graphic novels. His teacher encouraged him to check this book out in the school library, he reluctantly did so. He LOVED it and read the entire book in under an hour. I quickly got on online and bought him the rest of the series. He read through the series a few times already.
I read this series to my second graders. It's just creepy enough to keep their interest, but not enough to scare them. They LOVE these books, they beg me for them. They have illustrations on every page, and I love how some pages are black with white writing instead of the usual of black writing on white pages. I really like the vocabulary used as well. There are around 13-15 chapters in them, but they are very short so it's perfect for the last 5-10 minutes of class. My students reenact the books at recess....too cute! LOVE LOVE these!!! The only thing is that, as of now, there are only 2 books that have the AR tests : (
My seven year old son has been reading since age 2, but very reluctantly. He'd much rather be playing. We try to get him to read 20 minutes every day, but usually it's like pulling teeth. Last night, he sat down and read this book, cover to cover in about an hour. I couldn't pry him away from the book to go to bed. I will continue to buy Eerie Elementary books as fast as they are published.
My 5 year old loves these books. We read the first one and he loved it so much that I bought this one. He begs to read it every night. We usually read 2-3 chapters before bed and he always begs me to read one more chapter. I was able to find the 3rd book at the library so we will be starting that one next. I definitely recommend this book for school age kids.
We’ve only read the first two books in the series, but these are highly recommended. Our boys are under 10 and LOVE them. Thank you to the writer/editors!
I bought this books for myself because I LOVED Sam Ricks illustrations. My daughter who is in Kindergarten saw it and asked me to read it to her. She LOVED it and made me read it to her cover to cover. It was just the right amount of creepy but not too scary. Excited I told her I have the first one as well and she has begged me to read it tonight. Great series!!!
My 8 year old loves this series. The way the second one ended made it sound like there would be more books written in the series. We're hoping so. My son also loves Notebook of Doom and Dragon Masters, series that are also published under Scholastic's Branches arm. As a parent, I've found the Branches books to be great for reluctant readers who may get overwhelmed by the thought of going from leveled readers with pictures on every page to reading chapter books with smaller type and visuals every few pages. The Eerie Elementary series is an engaging story that infuses just enough scariness/intrigue into the text, but not too much for my son's age that it would make him anxious. Vocabulary is right for the age group and the pictures support the text for kids who are still working on combining reading aloud with real-time story comprehension. My son's 20 minutes of reading homework for school each day goes much more smoothly when he's reading books he feels good about and that he wants to pick up again the following day because he wants to know what happens next. The end of Eerie Elementary #2 left both of us wanting to know what happens next. Please write more in this series Mr. Chabert.
