Amazon.com Review

Throughout World War II, cartoonist Bill Mauldin documented the adventures and misadventures of dogfaces Willie and Joe, symbols of the hard-pressed infantry, "the group which gives more and gets less than anybody else." In Up Front, recently reissued as a 50th-anniversary volume, Mauldin joins an absorbing narrative account of just how hellish combat is to a selection of those cartoons. Reading through this powerful book, one sees why Mauldin, in demythologizing the war, was often accused of undoing the efforts of the morale officers and politicians who assured the home front that our boys were having a fine time of it in Europe. No, Mauldin replied through Willie and Joe, our boys are being maimed and killed every day. For his honesty, the troops loved him -- and Mauldin loved them= back.

Mauldin's classic portrait of the World War II combat soldier is being reissued in this facsimile edition to coincide with the 50th anniversary of V-E Day on April 29. Though Mauldin was known for his cartoons of dogfaces "Willie" and "Joe," reviewers praised his prose, with the New York Times calling Up Front a "vigorous, brash, youthful but excellent book."Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A very good book for those interested not only in Bill Mauldin's imaginative and outstandingly empathetic cartoons, but wanting more knowledge about Mauldin, himself. The introduction from Stephen Ambrose does a great job of setting the stage, something needed today for most readers to grasp the tough environment of World War Two. Maudlin was right in the thick of that war, and well communicated many of the challenges faced by the common foot soldier, as was I in the dirt of a later war. This book does not cover post-war activities of Bill Mauldin, rather his so valued and memorable war time cartoons.

Great doesn't really describe how wonderful and important this book is. It should be required reading in all leadership courses, both military and civilian. It's funny; it's heartbreaking. I read this book six times in the sixth grade and probably another six times since. It influenced my life and continues to do so. All those captions I kept in mind through a military career, and they led me to better leadership than would have been the case otherwise. It's possible this book saved my life. God knows something did, and this was the start of my military education. Stephen Ambrose wrote the foreword, but this is Bill Mauldin's book. Stephen Ambrose is a great author, but Bill Mauldin was a great man, one of the great soldiers, artists and writers of his or any other generation. Anyone who wears the uniform of the United States should read this. Now.

He was the ultimate liberal cartoonist, a now extinct breed who knew how to afflict the comfortable, comfort the afflicted and always needle the pomposity of the smug Eastablishment.Strangely enough by today's standards of spiteful politics and bitter cartoonists, he was always kind.Mauldin was the best cartoonist of the past century. For years, as editor of a small newspaper, I used his editorial page cartoons which continued to poke fun at the inevitable congruities of life. He was a complete contrast to modern cartoonists who have forgotten the touch of kindness, humility, empathy and sympathy. Mauldin was on the front lines of the bitterest war of the past century; yet, even in his early twenties he realized vast numbers of people on all sides were more victims than perpetrators of evil.As a product of the Great Depression, Mauldin realized life is a struggle against the fates, whether they be rules, bosses, officers and enemy shells. In recent years, an attitude has developed that our modern unearned luxury is a personal right and anyone or anything that interferes deserves bitter hatred, vilification and attack. From Rush Limbaugh to Ann Coulter, political comment is now based on hate instead of intelligence. Mauldin faced dangers and threats greater than they can ever imagine, and never lost his sense of kindly comment on the incongruities of even the toughest challenges. He's an example of how World War II produced "the greatest generation". These were men and women who could at least smile -- and Mauldin often provided a laugh -- at the hardships they faced. When faced with great danger, brave people find a reason to laugh. Mauldin expressed this courage better than any other cartoonist of World War II. When faced with minor annoyances, spoiled brats find a reason to whine as you can see in the drawings of modern cartoonists.America has turned from a land that bravely endures hardship into a society that whines, pouts and throws childish temper tantrums over ticky-tocky-tacky trivia."Up Front" is a magnificent tribute now, as in 1944, to everyone who endured incredible hardships to preserve freedom. Read the reviews of the reprint edition; they pay just tribute to Mauldin's genius to the relevance to the real maning of war and life in the military. Then, read the book. It will show up the modern whining wimps of war as privileged two-faced twits who don't know how to handle toy soldiers on a bedspread let alone true soldiers in a real war. This book is a gem. Count yourself lucky there are still old editions available.

This is a nice book about Bill Mauldin's experience in Europe, written in Europe during World War II. He spent some time in the infantry, I gather, but spent a lot more time drawing cartoons, first for a regimental paper and then for "Stars and Stripes." The gritty cartoons showed how Mauldin viewed the war. Rubble was strewn everywhere like it was rubble, uniforms were torn and rumpled and modified. Only the best of his WWII cartoons make the cut in this book. If you just want the cartoons, then pick up Bill Mauldin's Army, which also includes the demobilization process. However, the text in Up Front is what makes this book worth picking up.Mauldin talks about his experiences, what it was like at Anzio, how much combat medics were appreciated, how people in the rear absconded with gear, and so on. These stories are all very similar to stories from the Pacific theater, except Mauldin also describes how the experiences affected his cartoons. I'm not sure why it isn't as bloody as the Marine memoirs With the Old Breed and Goodbye, Darkness, whether it's military censors or temporal proximity or the European theater, but you never get the feel of the meat grinder that makes the others so inspiring.I'll end by paraphrasing what I found to be the funniest line in the book:I never drew a cartoon about a screaming memee. There's nothing funny about a screaming memee.

Nothing better from that period of conflict. Ol' Bill tells it like it was, and shows a lot of the humor that existed among American warriors as they struggle to survive and mainly wish to get back home. The condition of the binding and all pages are excellent.

Keep hive no them away. Anyone who wants to know about the U S Army in WW2 needs this book. It is why we won the war the Dog FaceI salute you all. We need a Bill Malden in Korea, Vietnam and the Near East (Afghanistan and Iraq)
