What I like most about this book is the selection of Apocrypha books that Mr. Lumpkin included.All of the ones that I was looking for are there!The only negative for me is the same issue brought up by a previous reviewer-navigation is a pain in some of the books. It is very difficult in Enoch and Jubilees to find a specific chapter and verse because of lack of labeling beyond the first page/chapter heading. Even the book name on one side would be helpful.I would still recommend this book in the Apocrypha category.
Included in this book are all the books that are in the Ethiopian version of the Bible, all of the books in the Catholic cannon as well. All of the books that I read in here compliment the Bible well, and none of it is heretical nor does any of the teachings go against the doctrines of Christianity. These books are necessary, in my opinion, in filling the gaps of the Holy Bible. The book of Enoch, for example, fills in a lot of the story of Genesis when the fallen angels take women as wives and create the Nephilim (large giants) that lead up to the Flood. "The Apocrypha" could be purchased for this book alone. I started seeking out these lost books on the internet, but it is so much more valuable to have a hard copy of these works. The books of Ezras are amazing as well. 1 Ezra is in the standard Bible, and the books in "The Apocrypha" are a must for any eschatologist. This book is very long, much longer than I thought it would be. It is well over five hundred pages and reads a lot like the King James Version. Before 1850 these books used to be printed in most Bibles, and there are some theories that the information was removed because the information was deemed as too important and that it should be withheld from the general audience. By no means do these books trump the Bible. The Bible should be the core of devotional study, but these works compliment the Bible.UPDATE 4/15/15 I just read the book of Clement, which is amazing. It should be in the New Testament! So eloquent and beautiful the way he talks about God! A lot of aphorisms in the book that read like proverbs that you can sit and ponder for a long time. Also fascinating how he talks about his contemporaries like Paul.
It is what it is. It's okay. But I wouldn't have bought it after seeing it. I would give it less stars but blame myself for not posting questions first. The Ethopian Jews have many apocrophal books that go with the "Old Testament" but none of those were included.
I am a Christian and have read much, if not all, of the Bible but had never read, before now, any of the Apocrypha. Reading and studying the books of the Apocrypha was intellectually rewarding. There are many new (to me) stories of faith and sacrifice. I was particularly impressed with the parables of the books of The Shepherd of Hermas.
This book has a lot to offer. It explains the history of these scriptures in easy to read and understand language. I especially like the references to other scriptures. The only downside I see to this book is that it does not list the books at the tops of the pages, so when you go to find a different book, you have to refer to the page number, rather than a quick flip. Also, the chapter numbers could have been larger. But it is a real page turner and a refreshing read. A very good book.
This book has 4 other books that are not in the kjv apocrypha. Book of hermas, letter of jeremiah, psalm 151, enoch, jubilees, 1 clements. This book was not an 8x10 but a 8x5.
This book is positively RIDDLED with formatting errors and inconsistencies, typos, spelling errors, and mathematical errors (see pages 9, 377, 378, all page headers, etc.). Based on this alone I cannot trust the accuracy of its content. The author claims to hold a PhD; if I had handed this mess in to any of my professors, even at the baccalaureate level, it would have been returned to me immediately with instructions to fix it.
The books of the Apocrypha tend to fill in the 400 years that God seemingly went silent between the old and the new testaments. Although not accepted into the 66 books that make up the majority of Christianity's Holy Bible they never the less are an interesting read. So buy the book and be enlightened.
This bible contains the books that were taken out long ago. Much knowledge and wisdom is gained through the other books, which were written for this final generation, they have the stolen keys to the kingdom written in them. I would search out all extra biblical texts, because they will help you understand the Bible, as well as how to follow Jesus. Shalom.
