"I thought it was a living organism, Can: it had a beginning, it had a youth, it had a time getting old, and a time to die." Holger Czukay. This book is for all you longtime Can fans (like me) who have waited for an in-depth book on this idiosyncratic band. Divided into two distinct parts--the first part a biography of the band--the second more of impressionistic look at the band's influences in various areas from the perspectives of different artists. But taken as a whole this book is the best look at this great band that most (all?) of us will ever really need. When I first heard about this book months ago from European friends (it was published earlier there) I had some trepidation about the way it was going to be laid out--biography--great--a melange of diary entries and conversations about the band's influences--hmmm. But the two sections work well together. The biographical portion (by Rob Young) goes into much needed detail about the band and it's various members with many insights and interesting pieces of information about not just the band itself, but the facets that helped form band member's outlooks and ultimately their music. The second portion of the book (from Can keyboardist Irmin Schmidt) is more of a look at the band through diaries and discussions, and in many ways is a very different approach to the band compared to the more straightforward biography.Taken together the two parts of this book make up a very fine look at this band, what made them "tick", and how their music was created, and how that music continues to influence others in the present time. For long time Can listeners who wish to know more about this sometimes mysterious band and their sometimes even more mysterious music, this thick book is pretty indispensable. Their music will perhaps mean more to you after you've digested this book.
That this book even exists is amazing in itself...that it exists in English, even more so! I devoured this book, and it went very quickly. The "biography" section is just over 320 pages. It provides a great insight to CAN, and put things into a necessary perspective...and then I went through it a second time to make notes to form a chronological timeline to better organize my own CAN collection. There are interviews with band members, and ancillary personnel who were "there" when things happened, as well as many entertaining and humorous anecdotes. If you are debating the purchase of this book: IT'S WORTH IT..Now, that said, could it have been better? "Better" isn't the right word! I would have appreciated a discography, and an appendix of known CAN concert recordings with track listings. Also, there are a handful of mysteries I wanted to solve, that unfortunately remain unsolved (admittedly, many others are, though!). I wanted to know what the limited-edition ONLYOU album was about, and why (it never gets mentioned). I wanted to know what in the world "Inobe" is in the title "Like Inobe God." I wanted an entire chapter about the recording of "Red Hot Indians." I wanted Holger Czukay's brilliant and succinct summation of "We never bathed in the same water twice" to be in there somewhere. Also, I was puzzled at Damo Suzuki's almost dismissal of his time with CAN, and I wanted to hear more from him. Now, most of the things I just listed are fanatical minutiae! If you can live without them--or even if you can't--by all means, buy this book.
Rob Young has done an amazing job at delving into the history of Can. The book is mainly from the perspective of Irmin Schmit as this is the bulk of the interviews that Young carried out (one of the few living original members) but over the years he interviewed almost every member and shows a fascinating insight into the band.
this is for any music fan like a bible is for a scholar
