I am sorry to see that some are disappointed in this novel. I was definitely not.Maeve Binchy has written many wonderful books. I have had a mixed reaction to them. Some have drawn me in and the stories have inthralled me. Others have put me off and left me feeling confused. I believe that the people she writes about are of a world so far from my own. I can relate to what happens to them based on the people I've known in my life.Maeve Binchy writes with a masterfully lyrical voice that soothes you. It is not to be missed. It does not lull you. It is like be on a boat on a gentle lake that rocks you as the wind moves you along. She describes all the senses - smell, touch, sight, pain, heat, such that you feel you are experiencing them. She does not waste words. A dress may be yellow without much description beyond that, but in some other way she will let you know more about the dress late as some admires it or the wind catches it.She uses her stories to explore the deep emotional rifts in relationships, their causes, their pain and possible outcomes. She explores long lasting, solid, loved based relationships that have stood the test of time. All are set in a variety of settings, times and with a spectrum of personalities. Her characters are for the most part three dimensional with clearly defined passions. They seem to be in intertwined dynamic groups, not all co-located in time or place. Wounds are opened, old wounds are explored, but there is healing in some expected and some unexpected ways.People move from one subgroup of characters within the book to another. There are bonds made and broken. All of this is described in a voice that makes the story engaging and allows you to put your ideas and your feelings into the book in a way that makes you feel involved in the story. But the outcomes can be as unexpected as the narrow twisting roads to the next small village at the top of the mountain on this small Greek island where this story of tragedy and healing takes place.
Maeve Binchy is one of my favorite authors. She has the capability to bring her characters alive on the page as solid human beings who struggle with relationships. She provides insight into her characters’ emotions and often has unexpected twists in her plots. This novel, more like a long short story, features five strangers in Agia Anna, a small village on the breathtaking, beautiful Greek Island of Euboea. These people are foreigners who have all fled problem situations at home. They come from disparate countries: Ireland, the United States, Germany, and England. There is Fiona who comes from Ireland with her abusive boyfriend, Shane. Elsa is fleeing her job as a TV news reporter after learning disturbing information about her untrustworthy boyfriend. David is trying to escape what he sees as a boring life in his future, a life of working in the family business and eventually running the company. Thomas is shaken by his divorce and his wife’s remarriage and misses his young son in California. The foreigners have a random meeting on a summer night at a small tavern on a hilltop overlooking the sea. Below them, a tragic ship fire creates a crisis and instigates their communication with each other. The characters, the foreigners, as well as the main village characters, reveal themselves slowly as they become more deeply connected. Through their interactions amongst themselves as well as the warm and welcoming villagers, the foreigners, with the exception of Shane who is sent packing, heal their wounds. Maeve Minchy creates a magical atmosphere in “Nights of Rain and Stars†that transports the reader to this village with its vistas, smells and tastes. This is a wonderful, comforting, and warm read.
I'm a bookworm. 2-3 books a week, both fiction and non-fiction in the mix. Maeve Binchy is one of my top 3 favorite authors and this is one of her very best books. I have all of her books in print, but now that I read more on kindle, I'm slowly adding the ones I most love and re-read in digital. This is one I definitely got. Read all her books. They'll make you a kinder, gentler person and they'll definitely make you want to visit Ireland, Scotland and England as she has various settings.
Random vacationers witness a horrific boating accident from the safety of a restaurant stop a steep hill. Of course they keep bumping into each other, and occasionally argue but mostly keep helping each other. Nobody writes about the magic of friendship better than Binchy. You'll feel better about those worries that wake you up at 2 am if you read this book. Many characters reappear in
I loved this audio-book. Maeve Binchy has a way of creating charming characters that immediately catch one's fancy and draw the reader/listener into the story. I have read/listened to a number of her books and find this to be consistently true. "Nights of Rain and Stars" and "A Week in Winter" are two of my Maeve Binchy favorites. Although I can not find any fault with any of her books. I have enjoyed every one I have listened to--"Nights of Rain and Stars"; "A Week in Winter"; "Whitethorn Woods"; "Minding Frankie", "Tara Road"--and will listen many more times to each of them. I wish all of her books were available unabridged on CD. I would buy them all!
This may be the most generally enjoyable and upbeat book I have read in many months. The idea of a group of very different kinds of people being thrown together by circumstance is certainly not new, but this one stands out for me. The characters are believable and interesting, both the tourists and the locals, and the descriptions of the island and the sea are lyrically beautiful. It will make you want to start packing. This is my first book by this author and I am going to find another one right away - can't believe she has gone past me for this long.
