Review
“Cédric Durand is among the most promising of young French university economists today. We awaited the publication of his new book with bated breath. It was worth the wait. Fictitious Capital is an important intervention which tries to make sense of the excesses of capitalism over the last forty years and of the development of finance.” —Jacques Sapir “Durand has provided a very insightful view of finance-driven capitalism over the last three decades. Why was it able to prosper alongside sagging investment and plummeting productivity gains? The answer, argues Durand, lies in the tight connection between the shareholder value principle and the globalization of the real economy.” —Michel Aglietta “Fictitious Capital is a fascinating and extremely informative exploration of the destructive role of finance in our contemporary political economy. Filled with brilliant insights and an impressive historical and theoretical reach, Durand explains and utilizes Marx's concept of ‘fictitious capital’ to illuminate the inner workings of contemporary global capitalism and to pierce the murky veil that mainstream economics and neo-liberal thought has long used to hide and distort the powerful role of finance. Students trying to understand the precarious political and economic position in which we find ourselves, as well as the theoretical foundations for understanding this, will learn much from this well-written, data rich, and theoretically clear exposition. If you read this terrific book, you will come away well-armed for the struggle ahead.” —Gerald Epstein

Excellent
“Fictitious Capital†by Cedric Durand is a tour de force deconstruction of finance capitalism and our perilous moment in history. Professor Durand is a brilliant economics and development theorist based in Europe. This exceptionally well-written book will interest everyone who cares about economic justice.Professor Durand demonstrates how the rise of fictitious capital comes at a cost to society. The author begins with recalling how unaccountable financial forces fueled the 2007 financial collapse. The socialization of the costs from the disaster supports the author’s contention that fictitious capital controls the real economy – not the other way around.Professor Durand defines the three forms of fictitious capital – credit money, government bonds and shares – to show how they represent outsized claims on future receipts; thus diminishing real productive investment, slowing economic growth, and widening inequality. Importantly, professor Durand presents original research to prove how the financial sector has grown. We learn how indebtedness is a crucial mechanism for amplifying finance’s power over business, government and society. In the powerful concluding chapter, professor Durand puts it all together. We see how globalization has empowered fictitious capital to exploit uneven relations between nation-states. We understand how politics has championed specific policies that have broken the working class by subsidizing finance. More than anything else, this fascinating and eye-opening journey helps us appreciate that fictitious capital cannot stand on its own. It’s a critical insight worth remembering as we struggle for a better economy that works for the many, not just the few.I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.
This is probably the most frightening book I have ever read. This is must reading for a true understand of why this country will never be great again. Great in the sense that America will be great for everyone. Robert Shiller in today's New York Times notes that we have lost our sense of community and moved to how wealth will determine our happiness. We are being squeezed of our truly wealth, the wealth of family and community. Watch the national agenda and you will see the squeeze, except for the 1%.Dennis Cavanaugh
